EXAMPLES OF POISONS*
Medication
Antibiotics, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, antidepressants, cough and cold preparations, diabetes medications, heart medications, painkillers, sleeping pills, stimulants and street drugs, iron pills, laxatives, contraceptives.
Food
Food and drink contaminated with bacteria, viruses or mould.
Household Chemicals
In the kitchen- Dishwashing detergent, rust remover, bleach, disinfectants, carpet cleaner.
In the bedroom- Cosmetics, perfume, cologne, deodorant, nail polish remover, jewellery cleaner, room deodorizer.
In the bathroom- Drain and toilet bowl cleaner, shampoo, soap, suntan lotion, shaving cream, hair dyes, softeners, mouthwash.
Others- Batteries, mercury thermometers, ant or rat poison, pesticides, mothballs, kerosene, lighter fluid, turpentine, glues, paint, paint remover and thinner, weed killers.
Animals
Snakes, spiders, scorpions, insects and sea animals such as jellyfish, stonefish, stingrays, blue-ringed octopus, sea urchins and cone shells.
Plants
Any part of a plant can be a potential poison. This includes the roots, leaves, stems, flowers, fruit and sap.
